It is narrated that his teacher, Imām Nāfiʿ, nicknamed him as Warsh due to his fair complexion. The word warsh itself indicates something made from milk, white and very clear.
Others state that Nāfiʿ nicknamed him Warshān, a name of a well-known bird, and later shortened it to just Warsh. Warshān is a bird with a very sweet voice.
Warsh himself liked the nickname and was proud of it, stating at times: “My ustādh, Nāfiʿ, named me with this!”
