Humility and humbleness of Imaam Aasim

Imam Sufyān al-Thouri, a well-known scholar of Iftaa (Islamic Law) was a student of Imām 'Āṣim in Qirā’ah. When Imām 'Āṣim wanted to discuss Iftaa, he would go to Imam Sufyān al-Thouri, because of his humility in seeking knowledge. He did not think that Imam Sufyān al-Thouri should come to him.

Imām 'Āṣim told Imam Sufyān al-Thouri “You came to me, when you were small (referring to knowledge in Qirā’ah) and I come to you when you are big ((referring to knowledge in Iftaa)”

From this incident, we can see that Imām 'Āṣim was a humble person, despite being extremely knowledgeable and holding the position of the Shaeikh al Qurrā' in Kufa after Imām Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī.

This is the dua recited by Sayyiduna Sulayman (AS) to thank Allah for the blessings and seek humility always.

“Lord, inspire me to be thankful for the blessings You have granted me and my parents, and to do good deeds that please You; and include me, by Your grace, among Your righteous servants!”

Surah An-Naml (verse 19)
