لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ 1- Surah Yusuf :53

And I do not seek to free myself from blame, for indeed the soul is ever inclined to evil, except those shown mercy by my Lord. Surely my Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

The word لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ (Meaning: is, a certain enjoiner) occurs once in the Qur’an.

Recitation Challenge: One may miss the Hamza and recite it as لَمَّارَة , which is incorrect.

Tajweed Tip: To ensure that Hamza is recited after laam

Contemplation: The Quran mentions three types of Nafs. The first type in surah Yusuf: 53, ٱلنَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ : In which, one is dominated by inner desires, self-satisfaction and immediate gratification. This Nafs seeks the pleasures of this world and is sovereign over a human being, and the human being follows all of its commands. The sign that a person has this type of nafs is that they sin willingly, blatantly, remorselessly, in any way that, they ever want. The second type is mentioned in Surah Al-Qiyamah:2 , ٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَة : This nafs makes a human being conscious of their own imperfections by blaming themselves for following their insatiable desires which demand instant gratification. This Nafs desires what is good, is aware of the excellence of good actions and keeps the self away from wrong actions and bad deeds. At this stage, the person’s conscience is awakened and his/her consciousness, rationality and aspirations inspire the nafs al-lawwama to be perfect. The third type is mentioned in Surah Fajr: 27. ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ is a state of serenity, tranquility and peace. This Nafs is content: mutma’in with what Allah Almighty is pleased with, such human beings are pleased with Allah’s decree and are in a state of tranquility. Having lived a disciplined life, such people have finally become selfless and humble by abandoning false pride, greed and dominance, which should be everyone’s ultimate goal.

أَحْسَنُ عَمَلً 2- Surah Hud: 7

He is the One Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days—and His Throne was upon the waters—in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And if you ˹O Prophet˺ say, “Surely you will ˹all˺ be raised up after death,” the disbelievers will certainly say, “That is nothing but pure magic!”

The word أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭ (Meaning: is, bets in deeds) occurs four times in the Qur’an

Contemplation : Why was this world created? Allah (SWT) created water first and then, heavens and the earth in six days. It is within the perfect power of Allah Ta` ala to create all these things in the flash of a moment but, in His infinite wisdom, He has made the system of this world gradual which is suitable for human temperament. The purpose of the creation of the heavens and the earth has been identified at the end of the verse by saying: لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا (So that He might test you as to Who, among you is better in deeds). The creation of the heavens and the earth was not the main purpose. The fact is that these were created for human beings to act right, do better and, along with it, also make the best use of what has been placed therein to run their lives. It is expected of human beings to ponder over the creations and not miss to recognize their creator/Master and Lord (the Malik, the Rabb). Note: Another manifestation of the all-encompassing knowledge and perfect power of Allah Ta` ala has been mentioned in this verse (7)
