فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ : Al-Baqarah

He has only forbidden you ˹to eat˺ carrion, blood, swine, and what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity—neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need—they will not be sinful. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful

The word فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ (But whoever is forced [by necessity] )occurs four times in the Qur’an

Recitation Challenge: In this word, the letter ض is meeting the letter ط

The two letters share common sifat of majhoor (apparent), have istia’ala (elevated) and itbaq (sealed), and while articulating both letters there is the role of tip of tongue and sides of the tongue as well, hence there can be a tendency that the letter ض is not pronounced completely and instead the letter ط is pronounced where it will become like فَمَنِ اطُّرَّ which is wrong.

Tajweed Tip: Take precaution to Firstly articulate the Makhraj of the letter ض correctly which is, by using the whole sides of the tongue and touching the upper Molar teeth, along with Rikhawa (longer timing) and Secondly articulate correct Makhraj of the letter ط which is, from the tip of the tongue while using the sides as well.

This will ensure no merging of the two letters and the correct way is to recite is فَمَنِ ٱضْطُرَّ.

وَيَبْصُۜطُ: Al-Baqarah

مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَٰعِفَهُ‌و لَهُۥٓ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةًۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْصُۜطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

[البقرة-٢٤٥]

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.

The word وَيَبْصُۜطُ (and grants abundance) occurs once in the Qur’an

Recitation Challenge: In this word, the letter س appears above the letter ص which may confuse the reciter. Should one recite with س or ص ?

Tajweed Tip: When there are two letters written one above the other, it is appropriate to recite the letter which is on the Top (by way of Hafs an’Aasim ). As the letter س is above the letter ص it is recited as وَيَبْسُطُ and not as وَيَبْصُطُ.

Note: The Qur’an, has many such words, in some places it is allowed to recite with both letters, but in most of the places it is better to recite the letter which is on the Top.
